Biography
Pang Tong was an advisor to Liu Bei during the Late-Han period. He was friends with Sima Hui and Zhuge Liang, and was nicknamed ’Young Phoenix.’ At first, Pang Tong was appointed as an Attendant Official and ordered to assist the prefect of Leiyang. When he proved to be a terrible administrator, however, Pang Tong was given rank as Master of the Army, and given authority over military administration, discipline and strategy.
Pang Tong’s most famous deed was recommending to Liu Bei three plans to seize Yizhou, a province belonging to Liu Zhang. Pang Tong advised Liu Bei to either: A.) Launch a surprise attack on the city, B.) Invite Yang Huai and Gao Pei, the defenders of Boshui Pass, to come see Liu Bei leave for Jing and then to arrest and kill these two (and thus gain control over their armies) or c. ) Go back to Jing and decide to seize the Riverlands (Yizhou) some other time. Of these, Pang Tong thought the first one the best and the third one the worst, but Liu Bei decided to adopt the second scheme. After Liu Bei had absorbed the forces of Yang Huai and Gao Pei, he went on to besiege the city of Luo. Unfortunately, though, Pang Tong was killed by a straw arrow during this siege, at only the age of 36. Pang Tong’s son, Pang Hong, would later become the governor of Fu.
